AMERICAN WOOD FLUTES*

My hand made flutes in no way are Native American. My flutes are tuned and keyed to the European music system but many hundreds of years ago they were tuned to the body measurements of the maker. The woods used for my flutes are mainly Michigan Red and White Cedar, Michigan White Pine and Michigan Black Walnut. We use the best environmental practices as possible with all aspects of acquiring the wood and the crafting of the flutes. This has been a practice since the beginning of Redbelly Flutes back in 1995. Today there really is no right or wrong to make these flutes but as a maker there are ways to improve the sound. About 5 years ago I moved past these ideas of what others have said is “The Right Way “. The main reason for this was a repeat in sound quality and performance. This is where my friend Dan Haviland comes into the journey. With his help I said good bye to the slow air chambers, sharp edge on the sound whole and spacer plate. I was very happy to say hello to better sounding flutes!! All Native flutes in the world were improved as the knowledge was passed to the next generations. So, when asked by people are my flutes tuned and what scale are they I gave this above answer with a little more verbal detail.

If you are interested in a flute from me please email me at dmartinka@redbellymusic.com

REDBELLY LIVES, David Martinka

*In honor and respect to the Native American Crafters and Players, as well as the Non-Native American Crafters and Players.  The term American Wood Flute will be used to best describe the instrument that David Martinka crafts.

The US Government conceders a product Native American made if the person is a card carrying member of a tribal nation. Flutes by Redbelly Flutes are not Native American Flutes.
